Hair and Makeup in Fairfield County, CT for Maternity, Newborn, and Family Sessions

Over the last few years, I’ve made some changes in my business with the sole intent to serve busy mamas and do everything I can so that sessions are not only stress-free but something you look forward to. I don’t want these sessions to just be milestones that you are documenting because you’re “supposed to.” I want the entire experience to be something that you look back on as some of your most fond memories because you were with your family and able to be fully present with them.

Hair and makeup is one of those services that I knew I had to offer and have been so blessed with the hair and makeup artists that have served our moms. Kimberleigh with Eye For Beauty CT has been one of those and we’re excited to share this Q&A with you. She’s sharing her best tips so that you’re prepared the day of your session!

Q&A With Kimberleigh

1 - Best tips for preparing hair and bare face? Best time to wash hair, anything to do/not do, apply to skin, etc?

Please arrive with clean dry hair (either washing the night prior or morning of). For those that have naturally curly hair, you are more than welcome to use styling products right after showering. If you prefer to have curls for the photo session, make sure to avoid straightening your hair prior or having a keratin treatment.

A makeup and skincare free face is best. Our professional makeup kit has a wide range of foundation colors to custom blend to your skin tone. Our products are great for sensitive skin. If you feel comfortable bringing your own makeup, we ask that it only be your favorite shade of lipstick or mascara.

Some of the products, while very expensive (like chanel foundation) doesn't photograph well and are incredibly oily. Other times the ingredients in some sunscreen & moisturizers don't interact well with other foundations making it pill or separate.

2 - Tips for those with curly hair?

For those that have naturally curly hair, you are more than welcome to use styling products after showering. If you want to keep the natural integrity of your curl we recommend arriving with your hair fully air dried. Otherwise, you are more than welcome to blow it out the night prior so it will be easy to style the day of.

3 - How long will their hair and makeup last once done by you? Is this impacted by skin/hair type, and is there anything they should do if there are hours in between seeing you and their session?

Our makeup applications are known to last through 8 hour hikes and some steamy waterfall sessions! A touchup pod of foundation or lip touchup can be given if there is a long time in between the beauty service and photography session. While we custom blend lip colors with a lip stain, we still recommend drinking through a straw when possible.

The longevity of your curls is highly dependent on the weather, humidity and nature of your hair. A serum can be added to help tame any frizz. Choosing an up-style, or having hair pinned away from the face will help during breezy beach sessions. Loose curls are the most flattering option.

4 - What about Children?

For children under the age of 6, I do not recommend heat. I suggest getting a pretty bow or headband (Kristin has some!) or I can do a lace braid/side braid. If your child is 6 or older and you want some loose curls, I recommend using conditioner the night prior as this will be the least damaging and we would use a lower temperature. Everyone should have fully dry hair.

5 - What should a client do if they aren't happy with their look?

You're creating a memory you'll look back on for years to come. We ask questions every step of the way- from the amount of makeup you wear day to day, to your eyeliner and lip color preferences. We want you to feel beautiful and your best, so please let us know if you'd like anything changed.

6 - Should clients bring anything with them?

A loose fitting top is generally best.

Preserving Your Family's Legacy and Memories with Heirloom Albums

As much as I LOVE our beautiful custom frames, you only have so many walls in your home. Not every photo, detail, and memory can go on your walls. BUT, that doesn’t have to mean those photos cease to exist or have to live on a hard drive somewhere. Your photos are precious and they deserved to be printed and cherished.

Our custom-designed heirloom albums are such a treasure for your family to have. Having all your favorite images from your session in one beautiful book that you can look through any time and pass down to your baby when he or she is grown is a gift that will last for generations! A huge part of your legacy is in the photos of your family. So whether it’s your baby’s first year or your annual family portraits, you’ll never regret designing an album. Together, we’ll build your family’s library of memories and preserve the moments you want to hold onto forever!

Babies don’t keep and there’s nothing like seeing them grow as you flip through the pages. After each session during your baby’s first year, we’ll choose your favorites and at the end, he or she will have a stunning keepsake to look at as they grow up and for years to come.

Documenting Your Baby's First Year as a Collective Member

When you’re expecting, most of the time you are focused on the pregnancy and newborn stage. As you should, but when you’re thinking about photographing those sessions, I’d encourage you to consider documenting your baby’s first year, not just those early days.

Yes, those early days are SO special, but that first year is a year you’ll never want to forget. It’s a year you’ll want to be able to tell them about one day. Can you imagine what that would be like without photos? I tell you this as a Mom, and not just a photographer, because if I am being honest with you, I wish I had done it. I WISH I had known then what I know now.

4 Reason’s To Book A First Year Collective

1 - Takes the Pressure Off of You

Life is busy and that first year can be a blur. The last thing I want you to do is to get caught up in life as new parents and forget to book a session. When you are a collective member, we track those milestone months for you and reach out when it’s time to schedule!

2 - Priority Booking

As a collective member, you get priority booking for each of your sessions. This is particularly important during busy seasons or getting a coveted sunset session or weekend. AND- it may sound a little silly, but you also get priority booking for our Santa sessions which is a huge benefit because we sell out 100 sessions in a matter of minutes every year.

3 - Cohesiveness

When we know you’re going to have several sessions throughout your baby’s first year, we’re able to plan with more intention. We choose your location and wardrobe selections carefully knowing that the images from each session may be displayed together on a wall or in an album. Furthermore, using the same photographer from session to session allows for continuity and consistency within the images from the session to session.

4 - Relationship

Building relationships with my clients is one of the aspects of my job as a CT newborn and family photographer I value most. I love hearing your stories and getting to know your family. The more sessions we do together, the more comfortable you are in front of the camera! You also get to know me, the studio and the process, and what to expect with your images.

Investing in the first year collective is truly an amazing way to preserve some of your family’s most cherished years and memories. It’s one of the most special and tangible gifts you can give not only yourself but your children and family for years to come.

AND— like I tell every parent, your baby will grow quicker than they ever will in that first year. You may think you can skip a milestone and not miss out on much. But trust me, when you can’t turn back the time, you will give anything to have photos to look back on.

If you’re considering documenting your baby’s first year as a first year collective member, contact me so we can set up a chat!

Oh, what a year it has been with Nash and his precious parents. From his Mama’s belly to his first birthday session, he captured my heart! I have enjoyed every session with them, and I cannot believe how much he’s grown this year! Happy Birthday, Nash!

Photoshoot Locations in Fairfield County, Connecticut

Deciding on a location for your family photoshoot can feel impossible. With the exception of winter, our local parks here in Connecticut are beautiful. Spring and Summer bring the most beautiful greens. Then in the Fall, we get beautiful golden grass and all the colors that come with the leaves changing. But then there is the beach and who can turn that down, especially with a beautiful sunset?

In all honesty, you can’t go wrong with any of the locations we have to choose from in Fairfield County. I tend to do most sessions at Waveny Park in New Cannan or Sherwood Island State Park (both the park side and beachside) in Westport. In this post, I am going to share why I love each location and how to determine which is best for your family.

Keep in mind that your photos will look slightly different depending on the season, time of day, weather, and location.

Waveny Park in New Cannan, CT

Waveny is one of the parks that is pretty in Spring, Summer, and Fall. The big trees offer a lot of foliage, shade, and photograph beautifully. And despite sunset or “golden hour” being the preferred time to do photoshoots, I actually prefer afternoon light at Waveny. It’s crisp and clean and overall, it works better with my photography style. We can usually start about 3 hours prior to sunset and that generally works really well for families with little ones.

Waveny does tend to be more crowded on the weekend, is about a 5-8 minute walk out to our shooting location, and because of the trees and tall grass, you will need to be mindful of ticks. It’s often windy but the trees help with that. However, the colors here and the tall grass (as long as it’s not cut down) is always worth it!

To see more from Waveny Park, check out each of these blog posts:

Sherwood Island State Park - Park Side

I love what I call the park side of Sherwood Island, especially in the morning! The morning light there is perfect and allows little ones to play without having to worry about the direction too much. There are big trees- denser than those at Waveny but I love the green tones there! We can also do sessions in the afternoon and evening here, really making this side of the park an option almost any time of the day.

Sherwood Island is easy to access, close to the I95 and parking is also easy. To get to what I call the park side of Sherwood Island, you’ll exit to the right shortly after entering the gates. There is a grass parking area where I’ll meet you. It’s really close to where do sessions, which can be ideal for little ones, maternity sessions where walking may be more limited, or if you have elderly family members joining you. This past year, we have even done quite a few newborn sessions at Sherwood Island.

One of my favorite parts about the park side is the logs. It gives the little ones something to do without being a big distraction. I do like to tell clients, please be aware of the geese. They tend to leave the ground a little messy!

Sherwood Island State Park - Park + Beach

Sherwood Island really offers a lot of variety. You can choose park only, beach only or do a mix of both. If you want a mix of both or just the beach, we will go to East Beach. It’s also easy to access, open free to all CT residents. Note that NY plates are required to pay a small fee. At East Beach, we get a 2-mile span of beach, paths along the dunes with green grass, and a lot more space to work with if it’s crowded.

If we’re going to do both a field and beach, there is a small field right across from the beach area. We’ll start at the field then head to the beach closer to sunset. Clients will sometimes ask if their images will look cohesive and the answer is yes (as shown below), largely in part because of the greenery in the dunes and along the paths to the beach that we will often use.

Doing both will provide more variety within your family’s gallery. However, it’s not the right choice for every family. Sometimes sticking to one place and not having to move in the middle of a session is better. We’ll talk about this when planning for your session.

Time is an important factor with beach sessions. We will start one hour prior to sunset, which means in the summer months we are not starting until 7 pm. This can be a challenge for little ones sometimes. Some can push it for a night and others can’t. You know your kids and I ask you to be cognizant of that and let me know so that we set your family up for success!

What to Wear for Maternity, Newborn and Family Photoshoots | Why I Offer Client Wardrobe

As a Mom of two, I’ve been there. I’ve stood in my closet, starred at all of the clothes in front of me, and came to the conclusion that I had absolutely nothing to wear. I’ve also taken an arm full of clothes into the dressing room only to pick myself apart and leave empty-handed.

My guess is that you’ve been there too. And while I wish it wasn’t true, I’ve heard from so many friends, family, and clients that the stress over what to wear has actually stopped them from scheduling a newborn or family session. That absolutely breaks my heart.

It wasn’t long into my journey as a newborn and family photographer that I realized how true this was. I also knew that if I wanted my clients to truly enjoy having family portraits or ensure they scheduled a newborn session, I needed to find a way to alleviate this burden. The solution was fairly simple and what I didn’t know was how much it was going to change the trajectory of my business. Curious? Keep reading!

The Solution - A Client Wardrobe!

It didn’t happen overnight and I have learned a lot along the way. We currently have over 150 dresses for Mom, 100+ outfits for girls and boys ages 0-10, and even shirts for Dads. Various styles...casual, dressy, boho, classic...we've got it all.

Each piece in the wardrobe has been purchased with intention. I want the dresses to be flattering for moms and work for various body types. I work in textures and patterns that photograph well, and select pieces for the kids + dad that will coordinate easily. We are constantly refreshing the wardrobe so that what we offer is not only in style but new to all of our returning clients.

So why wardrobe? I knew that if I could provide a solution to one of the biggest barriers, that would mean more family’s having tangible memories over the years and photos to one day pass down to their children.

Offering a wardrobe also saves my clients money and likely a lot of time. Instead of spending hours shopping for outfits, we have a 30-minute styling appointment (currently done virtually due to Covid). We take into account the colors in your home, the location of your session, and coordinate your family’s outfits to ensure a cohesive look that will look beautiful hanging in your home.

Building a client wardrobe was really the first step towards offering a full-service client experience. This gave me a glimpse into what that would do for my clients and it made me want to offer more. Two years later, I can truly say that KWP takes care of every little detail from start to finish.

From the Digital Design to a Wall Gallery in Your Home

Do you want beautiful framed portraits of your family in your home but feel overwhelmed by figuring out what photos to use, what frames will look best, or even where it will all go? If that’s you, know that you are not alone. Many of my clients have said the same thing to me over the years. After putting all of the what if’s aside, investing in education, and choosing to build a business and experience I am passionate about (read more about the why here), you no longer have to make those decisions alone.

My goal is to make it as easy as possible for my clients so that they can be constantly reminded of the beautiful family they have built.

Connecticut-Newborn-Family-Photographer_0002.jpg

Step 1: Select a Wall

Deciding where you want to display your portraits is the first step. Do you want your portraits in the center of your home where you can see them every day? Do you want your portraits where guests can see them? Or would you prefer them somewhere more private like a bedroom or playroom? Do you want a statement piece or a gallery of images collected over time?

Once we decide on a space, I’ll have you take a photo of that wall. The photo needs to be taken as straight on as possible and tape up a piece of computer paper for size reference. This is something that you can do prior to your reveal and ordering appointment if you have an idea of what wall(s) you want to use. If you aren’t sure, we will go through it together during your appointment.

Step 2: Digital Design

I use an online design program that allows me to import the photo of the wall(s) from your home and insert possible design options. We will determine if you prefer an asymmetrical or symmetrical design and if it will need to be a stand-alone gallery or grow with your family over time.

What I love most about this program is it allows me to be able to show you a finished digital design to scale so that you can really visualize what it will look like in your home, with your furniture and paint colors!

Connecticut-Newborn-Family-Photographer_0001.jpg

Step 3. Select Your Portraits

This is probably the step that is hardest for clients, especially for newborn sessions! I get it, you want every photo on your wall, but that’s just not practical! Usually, once we have the design that looks best on your wall and know the photo orientation we need (portrait vs landscape), everything usually falls into place pretty quickly.

First, we narrow down what type of photos you want - family, siblings, individuals of children, etc. Then we will go through the gallery and pick similar photos and start putting them into the digital frame design. I have found that once we get to this point and start putting them into frames, favorites tend to become obvious!

Step 4: Select a Frame

While finalizing your favorite images, we will also start to see what frames you gravitate towards. I think this may be my favorite step in the process (up until the final reveal!). Selecting the frame really brings your portrait to life. When selecting a frame, we will consider the portraits you’ve chosen, the style of your home, your furniture, and overall decor style. We have several options to choose from including whites, silvers, distressed, grays, golds, and a farmhouse style.

Connecticut-Newborn-Family-Photographer_0003.jpg

Step 5: Prep Images for the Lab

At this point, I take care of the rest. I go through the portraits to be printed with a fine-tooth comb and apply any final editing touches. We make sure they are 100% perfect and send them off to the print lab to be printed and framed. All of your portraits are printed on fine art paper and then matted with a conservation mat board before being framed!

Step 6: Quality Check

Before you ever see your frames they will have gone through multiple quality checks between the lab and then once they arrive at my studio in Darien. I go over them very carefully to make sure they are flawless. In the event that there are any damages during shipping, I send it back to the framer to be fixed or replaced.

Connecticut-Newborn-Family-Photographer_0004.jpg

Step 7: Install

Finally…the day we have all been waiting for - your install! Many of my clients have told me that hanging frames was too stressful and they would either avoid it altogether or were not 100% happy with the final result. I get it. I used to feel the same way. But after investing in education and spending many hours learning how to professionally install frames, I really enjoy this part of the process.

Prior to your install appointment, I will have you prepare the wall we will be using and make sure I am able to access it easily. Once I arrive in your home I’ll lay out your frames for you for one final approval before I begin installing. After that, I encourage you to go spend time with your family or do something fun while I do all of the work! Once I have completed the install I will have you and your family come in for the final reveal!

FAQs

Can I change the photos in the frames myself?

No, you cannot. Professionally framed prints, like the ones we offer, will come with a dust cover on the back. This protects your image from dust or other particles that could damage it. You can, however, still, have your prints switched out by me or a professional framer.

Where do you buy your frames?

All of our frames come from a custom framer!

Do I need to have the same color scheme?

There are two things to consider when thinking about a color scheme - the colors in your home and then the colors in your wardrobe. The latter is especially important when doing multiple sessions.

Neutral or soft, muted colors not only photograph best for my style but also produce more timeless portraits. This is important for making sure they will work in your home for years to come regardless of any decor changes. In addition, when doing multiple sessions, it’s easier to coordinate and ensure they will provide a cohesive look throughout your home regardless of how much time passes between sessions.

What do you mean by designing a wall gallery that grows with my family?

If we are going to design a wall for your family to grow, we are often looking to fill a large space, and/or the client is doing multiple sessions with me. For example, many of my first-year collective clients know they want to select 1-2 images from each session but have it be one big gallery. During their first design appointment, we will design the wall gallery in its entirety so we know what the end result will look like. Some clients will choose to wait and install at the very end while some clients will want to install as we go.

Why I Offer Frames and Why I Think You Should Have Them In Your Home

Connecticut Newborn and Family Photographer | Kristin Wood Photography

When I met my husband in junior high (yes, that’s right junior high sweethearts!), we were just small-town kids with big dreams and puppy dog eyes for each other. We have both always been driven and incredibly hard-working, but I don’t think we could have ever imagined the life we have built together. We went to college together and then moved to Northwest Arkansas, where I attended law school and he got his MBA. After school, we finally got married :). I practiced law for 5 years (I still have my license in Arkansas) in various specialties.

But once we had our son (and later, our daughter), that dream shifted and I knew I was meant to be home with our children.

That decision didn’t change who I was at my core, though - a go-getter with a heart to serve others. I wanted both motherhood and a fulfilling career, but I honestly had no idea what that looked like.

At that point, we had moved a couple of times and I was starting to do more and more photography (I took my first photography class 11 years ago when we lived in Scottsdale and have been educating myself ever since). Fast forward a few years and we moved to Darien, CT and I knew it was time for me to either do something with photography or be done. Thankfully that go-getter in me won and here we are today.

Why do I tell you that? Because photography isn’t just about taking pretty pictures…and it certainly isn’t about having photos sit on a hard drive for you and your children to never see again. It’s about your story - your family's story. Whether you married your junior high sweetheart or met as adults, the life you are building matters, and where there is life, there is a story to be told.

What Do Frames Have To Do With It?

I mentioned before that we have moved a few times (5 to be exact). With every move, I have found that the first thing I want to do is get our family photos hung on the walls. It wasn’t until the last couple of years that I realized why. These photos of my children and our family bring me so much joy every single day. To see their little faces, our family, and the life that my husband I have built together, is a constant reminder of just how blessed we are.

I want my kids to see that too. I want them to know HOW much they are loved, and give them a sense of home and true belonging.

& I want that for my clients too.

So this past year when I made the decision to start offering a more full-service experience, offering frames was my number one priority. But I knew that I would have clients that were hesitant. Gallery walls can be intimidating and if we’re being honest….they can test a marriage! HA!

The whole goal of the KWP experience is to eliminate stress from start to finish. This includes the design, ordering, and installation of your frames. I’ve poured my heart and soul into education over the last year to be able to confidently provide and execute frame installation for my clients.

There is nothing more fulfilling than being able to install a gallery, step back and call for my client to see it for the first time. Their reactions continue to affirm my decision. But I am not sure anything beats the reactions that I get from the kids. The joy, the sense of pride, and their ability to see themselves in their family… is priceless.

If you’re on the fence, let’s chat. I’ve found that the hardest part is getting started. But I will take you through every step of the process, from choosing the wall, picking a frame, visualizing how a gallery can grow over time with your family, and finally the installation. No more stress over holes in the wall, crooked frames, uneven spaces, arguments with your spouse….or worse, not ever doing it at all.

This is where motherhood and career have come together for me. It’s the ability to be available for my children while serving other Mama’s and making sure they are able to look around the walls of their home and experience the same joy that I do.

The Baby's First Year Collective - Documenting Your Baby's Story with the very best! Connecticut Newborn Photographer

Last year I introduced a new collective to my newborn photography business in Connecticut, and it has been immensely popular with clients - The Baby’s First Year Collective.

The Baby’s First Year Collective includes 3 or 4 sessions- Maternity, Newborn, 6 Months and First Birthday. Your baby will grow and change every single day and this collective is perfect for making sure those milestones don’t pass you by. These touch points document you baby’s biggest milestones throughout the year and truly document your baby’s growth and development.

One of my favorite ways to preserve this precious year is with your Baby’s First Year Album. This is an album that we add to over the course of the year, choosing your favorites from each session to include. As a Mom of two, I WISH so much that I had done this for my own children. I had no idea how busy life would get once I became a Mom and creating a baby book just fell to the bottom of the to-do list….for 7 years now! Creating this baby book takes all the pressure off of you to DIY a baby book and beautifully preserves your memories of this incredible year! It also makes a wonderful heirloom for your family to enjoy for years to come!

Helping Make Your Home Beautiful - Connecticut Photographer

While I may not be out photographing clients right now, I’ve been working NON-STOP on so many new wonderful perks for my clients. One of the BIGGEST addition to the KWP experience is custom wall gallery design.

One of our most elements in our own home is the framed prints of our family that we have displayed. They bring us SO much joy throughout each day. I have also been able to help a few of my clients in displaying their beautiful portraits in their home, and I absolutely fell in love with being able to serve clients on a deeper level. So much so, that I am now including this for all my clients who wish to build a beautiful gallery wall in their home but have no idea where to start. Whether it be a large wall to fill with memories of your family over time or a small wall with a couple of favorite images, I will help you design treasured heirlooms for your family.

I have invested in an incredible program that will allow me to show you exactly what your portraits will look like in your space. Providing a Luxury Full Service Experience - Connecticut Newborn Photographer

As a small business owner (a Newborn Photographer in Connecticut), it is important to me that my business reflect who I am and what I believe in. It is also crucial to me that I feel like I am serving my clients to the absolute best of my ability and to do that, I am always thinking of what I can do to make the portrait process as easy and stress-free as possible for my clients. Many of those elements that I’ve added to my photography service come from my own experiences in life and Motherhood.

Take the Client Wardrobe for example. The morning of my newborn session for my first born, it dawned on me that I would need an outfit to wear for the photos. I had been SO swollen before my son was born that literally nothing fit. Oh and I was on bed rest. So the idea of shopping for clothes for a photo session was the LAST thing on my mind. So, I ended up in a white t-shirt and black maternity leggings. It looked horrible and I couldn’t stand to look at the photos of me. So when I opened my photography business, I wanted to make sure no new Mom ever felt that stress of not having anything to wear! Now I have a gorgeous client wardrobe with dresses (because they are most flattering) in sizes XS-2X so every Mom can find something to wear.

I also added hair and makeup for the same reason. I was in no condition (after a very difficult delivery) to do my own hair and makeup. I was functioning on no sleep, my milk had just come in, and my baby had been crying for 2 straight days. So I have partnered with some amazing hair and makeup artists who will come to my studio (or your home!) to get your ready for your photos so you don’t have to worry about getting ready. You can relax, drink some coffee and let my beauty team handle the rest. Meanwhile I will be taking your baby’s very first professional portraits!

One of the newest elements that I’ve added to the experience is finished heirloom artwork! My newborn photographer delivered our images on a flash drive. I thought I would make an album and print some to display somewhere in our home. I got online in the little bit of free time I had to try to find somewhere to print and album only to be overwhelmed with decisions. I got busy adjusting to life with a baby and never managed to find enough time to do it. Somewhere in the last 7 years that flash drive has been lost and now we don’t have any of the professional photos of my tiny newborn baby. SO SAD. Not only that, our investment in those photos was a waste because we never enjoyed the photos. They just sat on a flash drive in a drawer. Again SO SAD.

Since that time, we have learned the importance of enjoying those precious photos. We now make an album with our professional photos each year andI also have large frames with prints throughout our house so that we get to see them every day. And I feel that the best way to truly serve my clients is to help them not only get gorgeous portraits of these monumental life events, but also to help them enjoy and preserve those images so that they can be held close and passed down to your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren!

I have spent a year curating a collection of products that I think my clients will love and cherish. I am offering custom framed prints that are designed on YOUR walls to perfectly fit your space. I also have a gorgeous albums, which are the perfect way to preserve all your images from your session.

If you had a session this year and would like to add on an album or framed prints, that is always available to you! Just reach out and we will get the process started! It is super easy and you can spend your free time cuddling with your family instead of on the computer designing an album!
