This was such a fun extended family session. I’m so glad these Stamford natives decided to shoot at the beach in Darien. It made a perfect setting for the session, the kids had a blast, and we even got some sunset shots. They are a gorgeous family and so full of love for each other. The grandparents have been together for 49 years and I loved getting a snap a few of them together as well as them with their grandkids.

The Mom came over for a style consultation prior to the session. She tried on several pieces from the wardrobe and selected this beachy, flowy gray dress and also selected outfits for her two girls! The colors are perfection for the beach tones! The family ordered a custom gallery wall and they looked amazing in their home with the neutral, calm, relaxing colors!

Extended family sessions can be a real challenge at times. It is important to me to still capture those natural interactions and emotions and that seems to become more difficult with more people to corral. Having an awesome location with activities to do together really helps (in this case dancing in the sand and throwing rocks in the water).

Connecticut Newborn Photography | Baby Charlie's Lifestyle Studio Baby Session | Fairfield County, CT

The Ceglarksi Family was my very first client after we moved to Connecticut. I’m so incredibly thankful that she reached out to me. They are the sweetest family and have been huge supporters of me!

She had her second baby boy this year and I had the great honor of photographing their new family! Big brother Gus is the cutest little guy ever with his red hair and big blue eyes. It’s been so fun to watch him grow up this year! He was still a little unsure about this new baby joining the family, but was super curious about him! I know they will be the very best of friends as soon as Charlie gets mobile!

Mom’s beautiful blue dress (a perfect for choice for a Mom of 2 boys) was borrowed from the studio wardrobe. This is definitely one of my favorite session’s of the year. The warm tones and coloring are so gorgeous, and there were so many fun-loving moments that captured my heart! Here are some of my favorites from the day!

Connecticut Studio Lifestyle Newborn Session | Fairfield County Ct

Ah the Russ session. There are no words for how beautiful Brooke is! I loved working with her and her family!

Brooke decided to have my makeup artist do her makeup (gosh it looked amazing too) so when she arrived, she looked through the studio wardrobe and selected her dress (she made the perfect choice!) and then got some pampering by the lovely Angelina of Beautymarked Studio. While Mom was busy relaxing and getting that “new mom glow” from Angelina, I took individual images of her sweet baby girl! She slept a little bit for me and then woke up ready to eat and was so curious the rest of her session! When Mom was finished getting ready, Dad and big brother arrived. We selected some shirts from the studio wardrobe for them and let Mom feed baby (we take as many breaks as we need to tend to all babies needs!).

Big brother was so sweet and called his sister “Baby Giiiiirl”! Be still my heart! I used some of those tricks I have up my sleeve to get him to engage with the baby for the photos and they turned out so cute.

I really want my studio sessions to be as natural and authentic as possible, even though we are in a studio environment. I see my part as being the “placer” as I put my clients in the right spot for the best lighting. I then give them some direction and click away at the magic that happens while they love on each other!

Connecticut Newborn Photographer | Baby Josie's Newborn Studio Session in Fairfield County, CT

Kicking off the New Year with one of my favorite sessions from last year! This family is everything a photographer dreams of in a client. They love each other deeply and aren’t afraid to show that in front of the camera. They are kind, funny and authentic. I absolutely adored Jamie and really got to know her while she was getting pampered by my makeup artist!

When Jamie arrived, she came in like a breath of fresh air! We went right to work selecting her wardrobe and my makeup artist Angelina was already set-up and waiting to get started on giving her that “new mom glow.“ While she had her makeup done, I started taking individual portraits of her precious baby girl. We all chatted and laughed as we compared pregnancy and birth stories.

Once Mom was dressed and ready, I began to photograph she and baby together. This is my FAVORITE part of Newborn sessions. There is nothing more special and precious than a Mom with her brand new baby. About the time we were finishing up, Dad and big brother arrived! We moved right into family portraits, sibling portraits and then Dad and baby portraits! Big brother Noah did fantastic and was so loving toward his new baby sister.

Newborn Sessions Frequently Asked Questions | Connecticut Newborn Photographer Kristin Wood Photography

Many of my clients have similar questions about their newborn session.  I thought it might be helpful to answer some of those commonly asked questions on the blog to help others who might have the same questions!

When should I book my Newborn Session?  As soon as possible after you find out you are pregnant! I only take a handful of newborns a month (based on your due date), so to ensure I have room for your session, it is best to book in advance.

How old should baby be for the session?  The ideal time for a Newborn session is when baby is 5-10 days old.  They grow and change so much in the first few weeks so the sooner the better. However, I always want Mom and baby to be feeling well for the session, so if we need to wait a few extra days for Mom or baby, that is 100% ok!! I never turn babies away, no matter how old! When you decide to book your session, we will tentatively schedule for about 8-10 days after your due date and adjust after the baby is born if necessary!

What days do you shoot Newborn Sessions? I have Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday’s available for Newborn sessions. My schedule changes with each school semester based on my children’ activities so this is subject to change.

Where should we do my Newborn Session?  I offer in studio sessions at my studio in Darien, Connecticut.  It is set up as a lifestyle studio with a bed and other furnishings to look like a home.  I also offer in home lifestyle Newborn sessions.  The in-home sessions are ideal for clients with beautifully decorated nurseries with homes that get a lot of light.  Photographs are usually taken in the master bedroom and nursery during in-home sessions.

Can the family be in the portraits?  Absolutely!!! I spend most of the session time photographing your new baby with Mom, Dad and siblings (if there are any).  I love documenting those emotions and connections at the most special time in your life. 

What time do you start Newborn Sessions and how long do they last?  I start all sessions at 9:30 am.  They length of the session is really dependent on baby! I never rush through a session and leave plenty of time for feedings and tending to baby as much as necessary! Most sessions last 1.5-2 hours. 

Does baby have to be asleep during the session?  The short answer is no, they don't! I do a lot of cuddly family photos, photos with Mom, photos with Dad and photos with siblings.  Baby can be awake or asleep during this portion of the session.  I love when babies to sleep during their individual portion of the session so that they are still, calm and peaceful (and no worries of crazy hands and cross eyes you get with awake babies)!  Sessions move faster when babies are sleeping because we don't have to stop as often to feed and soothe.  I recommend that Mom and Dad keep the baby awake for an hour or two before the session so that baby will sleep right through the session!

Do you pose baby?  I have a natural, simple and organic style.  I do very minimal posing with baby and prefer to photograph baby in their natural, real positioning. 

What should baby wear during the session?  I have lots of wraps and a few little outfits that baby can wear during their session so their is no need to worry about clothing for your baby! If you have a special outfit or blanket, you are welcome to bring it!  For girls, I have headbands and bows as well!

What should Mom, Dad and Siblings wear?  No need to worry about this either! I have a client closet full of beautiful pieces for each member of your family.  If you want to bring your own clothing, bring light colors in white, gray, tan, cream, soft blue, soft pink, etc.

Do you offer hair and makeup?  Yes I have some wonderful makeup artists that I work with frequently who will come to the studio and get you ready while I photograph your baby alone! I recommend that if you have other children, Dad (or someone else) bring the children about an hour later to give you some time to relax and get pampered! The fee is $100 for makeup. I do not have a hair stylist at this time, but the studio is located very close to several salons who offer blowouts if that is something you are interested in.

What should I bring to the session?  Just yourselves, your baby, a paci if baby likes it, and formula/breast milk (you are welcome to nurse your baby at any time during the session so don't worry about pumping and bringing milk)! I have diapers and wipes on hand for your to use! I also have snacks and drinks at the studio for parents and siblings!

Fall Family Mini Sessions | Fairfield County Connecticut Family Photographer

I'm excited to announce that I'm going to offer Family mini sessions September 22 and 23!  These are limited edition in that this is the ONLY weekend for mini sessions (because I LOVE my full family sessions with wardrobe styling and I know you will too!).  These 20 minute mini sessions will be in my field location in New Canaan and include 10 edited digital images for download from your online gallery!  There will be 4 sessions each evening from 5-7 pm (so only EIGHT spots total!).  Contact me to book now before they are gone!!

Fairfield University Senior Session | Fairfield County Senior Photographer

When I was contacted to do a Senior session for a group of roommates at Fairfield University I jumped at the chance.  I mean how fun is it to work with a group of gorgeous, smart, driven young women celebrating the end of an era?!  When I showed up and they were all in white dresses I wanted to squeal from excitement (you know I love a white dress! haha!).  We had so much living out Sex and the City walking in the city scenes, popping champagne, and climbing on the school mascot!  For a moment I forgot I was old and Mom! Ha!

This was my first time to visit the Fairfield University campus and I was so impressed.  It is really beautiful and the view of the sound from the mansion is stunning!  I wish I was closer and could take photos their all the time!
